If you’re learning Greek, you probably already know Δεν ξέρω (Den xéro) — the most common way to say “I don’t know.”
But Greeks don’t always use the same expression. Depending on the situation, you’ll hear several different ways to say that you don’t know, you’re not sure, or you simply have no idea.
Beyond “Δεν ξέρω”
🤷 Δεν ξέρω.
I don’t know.
The simplest and most neutral option. You can use it in almost any situation.
🤷 Πού να ξέρω;
How should I know?
This is more expressive. Depending on your tone, it can sound playful, surprised, or even slightly annoyed.
💭 Τι να σου πω…
What can I say… / I don’t know what to tell you…
Greeks often use this when they don’t have a clear answer or aren’t sure what to say about something.
😅 Δεν έχω ιδέα!
I have no idea!
Use this when you really don’t know anything about the answer.
Tone makes a difference
Expressions like Πού να ξέρω; and Τι να σου πω… show why everyday Greek is about more than direct translation. The words, the situation, and your tone of voice all work together to communicate what you really mean.
