If you’re learning Greek, you’ve probably noticed something surprising: the “i” sound can be written in six different ways!
These are:
- ι
- η
- υ
- ει
- οι
- υι
At first, this can seem overwhelming. How are you supposed to know which spelling is correct?
The good news is that you don’t need to memorize every word. Greek spelling follows patterns, and recognizing them makes learning much easier.
Look for spelling patterns
Instead of trying to remember every word individually, focus on the most common patterns.
For example:
- Many feminine nouns end in -η.
- Many verb forms end in -ει.
- Many masculine plural nouns end in -οι.
Once you start noticing these patterns, spelling becomes much more predictable.
Don’t memorize—understand
One of the biggest mistakes Greek learners make is trying to memorize every spelling separately.
A much better approach is to understand why a particular spelling is used. As your vocabulary grows, these patterns become familiar, and choosing the correct spelling feels much more natural.
Remember, even native Greek speakers learned these spellings over time. With practice and exposure, you’ll become more confident too.
